Life in Spain

What It's Like Living in Spain

Spain offers sunshine, incredible food, a laid-back lifestyle, and a lower cost of living than most of Western Europe. The pace of life is slower, the people are warm, and the culture is rich.

🏥

Healthcare

Spain has an excellent public healthcare system (SNS). As a legal resident, you're covered. Private insurance is affordable (€50–150/month) and popular for faster access.

💰

Cost of Living

Very affordable by Western European standards. Madrid and Barcelona are the most expensive, but still cheaper than London or Paris. Valencia, Málaga, and Seville offer excellent value.

🚆

Getting Around

High-speed AVE trains connect major cities quickly (Madrid to Barcelona in 2.5 hours). City metro systems are excellent in Madrid and Barcelona. Driving is easy outside cities.

🌍

Culture & Lifestyle

Life revolves around family, food, and socializing. Lunch is the main meal (2–4 PM). Dinner is late (9–10 PM). Siestas are fading but the laid-back spirit remains. Fiestas and festivals abound.

🎓

Education

Free public schools that follow the Spanish curriculum. International and bilingual schools available in major cities. Spanish universities are affordable and well-regarded in Europe.

📋

Settling In

Get your NIE (foreigner identification number) immediately — you need it for everything. Open a bank account (BBVA, Santander, CaixaBank). Register at your local town hall (empadronamiento).

Climate

What to Expect Weather-Wise

Spain has some of the best weather in Europe — especially along the Mediterranean and southern coasts. The interior has hot summers and cold winters.

Spring
🌸
14–22°C / 57–72°F
Gorgeous across Spain. Orange blossoms in Seville. Perfect weather before the summer heat.
Summer
☀️
25–38°C / 77–100°F
Hot, especially in the interior and south. Beach season. Cities quiet as locals head to the coast.
Autumn
🍂
12–22°C / 54–72°F
Still warm. Great for coastal towns without the crowds. Wine harvest season.
Winter
🌤️
5–15°C / 41–59°F
Mild on the coast, cold in Madrid and the north. Sunny days are common even in January.
Where to Live

Best Areas for Expats

Spain's cities each have their own personality. Here are the neighborhoods where American expats feel most at home.

Madrid

Salamanca

Upscale, elegant neighborhood with wide boulevards, designer shops, and excellent restaurants. Safe, central, and popular with professionals and families.

Barcelona

Eixample

Modernist architecture (including Gaudí's buildings), wide streets, and a central location. Walkable, vibrant, and well-connected by metro.

Valencia

Ruzafa

Trendy, multicultural neighborhood with a thriving food scene. Valencia offers Mediterranean lifestyle at a fraction of Barcelona's cost.

Málaga

Málaga Centro

Revitalized historic center with museums, tapas bars, and a growing tech scene. On the Costa del Sol with 300+ days of sunshine per year.

Seville

Santa Cruz

Atmospheric old quarter with narrow streets, orange trees, and flamenco. Seville is passionate, affordable, and steeped in culture.

San Sebastián

Parte Vieja

The old town of Spain's culinary capital. World-class pintxos (tapas), stunning beaches, and a refined Basque culture. One of Europe's hidden gems.
